The 'Other' World / The Real World
Bracken is a mage, but he comes from a regular, modern day world set in the future. Bracken doesn't remember specifics of his life, but he does remember words and things from the real world, so he recognizes what things like televisions or cars are.
Bracken considers this the 'other' world rather than the 'real' world, because he can't get to it. Like the rest of his lectorium (guild), he's trapped in the game and can't wake up from it.

The 'World' / The Game
This is the game world that Bracken lives in. Since it manipulates the mind so that people can use all five of their senses inside of the game, Bracken considers it as much of a real world as the 'Other World', perhaps more-so because he can actually see it.
It is an MMORPG, with hundreds of thousands of other people playing. Players can manipulate the world in many ways; creating buildings, spells and even monsters.

It is not the only MMORPG of its kind, but it is the only one Bracken has been part of. It is a fairly stereotypical fantasy land, with many of the tropes people would expect to find in such an RPG. Warriors, mages, healers, fantasy species, etc.

There are many rules in the game that he has learned and incorporated into how he believes reality works.

Unconsciousness and death: When people lose all of their health they don't immediately die. They fall unconscious, and there is a period of time that someone can recover their body by touching them. If no one gets them, it's likely that they'll end up killed by a monster. If someone does get to them in time, they'll disappear and be revived inside of a town.

'Reincarnation': Someone whose character dies permanently can come back by making a new character. Bracken hasn't seen this happen personally, but he has heard of it, and because of it he believes in reincarnation. However, it's linked to coming back into the 'World' from the 'Other World,' and because he's stuck in one he's not sure he can be reincarnated himself. He's very fearful his own death would be permanent.

Teleporting: Towns, outposts and cities can all be teleported to freely once a player has made it to them. Every player can also drop a single portal of their own anywhere they want and let other people teleport to it.

Lectoriums: Lectoriums are the game's versions of guilds. People send messages and receive messages over lectoriums in their mind, making it feel similar to telepathy.

Private messaging: It's possible to send private messages to other people in the same lectorium or in a party. Outside of those places, there are designated areas where private messages can be 'mailed' to someone else.

Parties: Parties are formed when multiple people agree to join forces. They're similar to what would be found in other games, but instead of seeing members on a map people have the ability to 'sense' where they are.

NPCs: These look like real people, and can talk like real people, but aren't real people. They usually run shops or are part of stories. Bracken has learned that there is a difference between these and other people like him, since they don't have real thoughts.

Players: Bracken and others like him are the real people in the world. These people come from the 'Other World' and appear in the 'World,' and will appear and disappear all the time.

Monsters: These are soulless creatures made to be hunted. Whatever creature it is, Bracken doesn't believe they have thoughts or feelings. They die and they re-spawn, and nothing about them changes. They're fodder.

Building Blocks: People earn building blocks along with experience. Building blocks are used to be creative in the game. People can use them to build a home, create custom spells or even create their own custom monsters. How much someone has determines just how much they can do with them.

Waking up: People often say they need to wake up when they're going to log out of the game. Bracken equates 'waking up' to being told that someone is about to disappear from the 'World'.

Important People
Thistle: Easily the most important person in his life, Thistle is a chatty, boisterous pretty man. They met on the first day the game was opened and have stayed friends ever since. Thistle chatters away and Bracken listens.
Thistle is blond with long hair, petite and feminine. He likes making dirty jokes and speaks very informally. He would easily fit in with people online.
While he usually goofs around, he has no problem being serious when the situation calls for it. He initially defaults to teasing Bracken about forgetting where he was going, but when he discovers it's a serious problem for him he's sympathetic and tries to help. He gives compliments readily, and is the one to push Bracken to meet other people or join him for social gatherings.
He's fickle and doesn't stick to one job. While most other people in their lectorium (guild) have specialized, he's a jack-of-all-trades, dabbling in nearly every job and being decent to good in them. He often fills in for whatever job their missing in a party. He's also highly flirtatious and openly tells Bracken how cute he thinks the other guys are.

Hatter: Bracken looks up to Hatter. Hatter speaks in an eloquent manner and dresses in a refined Victorian-like or an elegant aristocrat fashion. His clothing is all custom made rather than using preset crafting recipes, and he's the lectorium's go-to guy for high quality garments. The first day Bracken joined their lectorium, he was the first to note that Bracken followed Thistle around like a puppy.
He is fond of Thistle as well, but he doesn't treat Bracken with any contempt. Thistle had previously asked him to be nice to Bracken because he was worried he had a hard real life, and Hatter has mostly watched out for him from a distance, treating him with respect. Though he plans on romancing Thistle and knows that Bracken also likes him, he has assumed that Bracken is too shy to pursue him and won't be competition.

Thenin: Before Bracken joined Thistle's lectorium, which was 'for gay men', he joined a lectorium for leveling, specifically only for the highest level people in the game. Thenin was another mage in the guild. Thenin was crass, homophobic and aggressive. He liked bragging, whether it was about how skilled he was or who he knew, and pushed Bracken hard to try and get the best performance out of him when they were leveling.
While his personality was lacking, he would also work to make sure no one in the group died when they were leveling. He rescued the tank of their lectorium, Willow, from being killed once when a fight went bad. When he and Bracken were the only ones left in the fight, he also yelled at Bracken what to do, and they ended up winning by bouncing the enemy back and forth between them.
He took an immediate disliking for Thistle because of how feminine the other man was and readily insulted and mocked him. While the lectorium had many members and not all of them were like Thenin, Bracken eventually left because of how stressful and time-consuming it was and joined Thistle's lectorium instead. Thenin blamed Thistle for Bracken leaving.

Dane: Dane has wolf ears and a tail, and takes on the role of the lectorium's main tank in parties. At first Bracken was wary of him. Dane took his job very seriously and spent a lot of time leveling, and it reminded him of his old lectorium. When they spoke, though, Dane revealed that making sure everyone survived was his responsibility, so he had to make sure he was strong enough to hold off a monster if everyone needed to run.
When their lectorium became trapped inside of the game everyone tried to find a way out at first. Over a period of months other members started to give up, but Dane never has. He continuously takes his mount and explores further around the world in order to find the anomaly that is holding them there. He's traveled further than anyone else. Bracken wishes he would give up and just enjoy being with everyone.

Kenzi: Kenzi has a pair of folded dog ears and a tail. He's very large, but he tends to slump over. Like Bracken, he's shy, and Bracken felt like he had an understanding with him because of that. He enjoys cooking and spends a lot of time developing his skill. He also fights hand-to-hand, staying in the front and guarding others in combat. At the point I'm taking him from, he and Bracken haven't developed much of a relationship yet.
Kenzi is interested in experimenting with master/pet relations, but he has been too nervous to bring it up with anyone yet.

Adair: Adair is a math teacher and chose to be a scholar in the game because of it. He casts his spells by using his staff to write in the air. He's logical, mature and friendly, one of the older ones in the group. A friend of his from the same college, Lilia, also plays in the game and he spends a lot of time with her.

Hayer: Hayer has rabbit ears and uses a bow. He likes to joke and tease, and is a bit loud, but is generally a good person. When everyone became trapped in the game he nearly starved to death while they were trying to find the unconscious bodies of all of the trapped people in the real world. An emergency alert had gone out forbidding anyone from logging in when they were trapped out of fear that the problem would spread to others, so they were left without a way to send a message to the outside world. While the majority of the lectorium tried to find anyone who had logged in despite the warnings in order to send out a message, Thistle stayed with Hayer to comfort him and hold him. He attempted to feed him to make him feel better, but since he wasn't getting any food in real life it didn't make a difference.
When they finally got a message out and Hayer was saved he developed a crush on Thistle because of the incident. For a while he believes that he and Thistle will be together, but he eventually moved on and started dating someone else.
